Umit Boz

Dr. Umit Boz is a Senior Instructor in the International Foundations Program at the Werklund School of Education. He received his B.Sc. in Avionics (Aviation Electronics) from the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Anadolu University, Turkey. He then pursued his graduate studies at the State University of New York at Albany where he received his M.Sc. in TESOL and his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Language and Literacies. Drawing upon his multidisciplinary background, Dr. Boz currently designs and teaches content-based academic language courses for Science and Engineering programs at the University of Calgary. Additionally, Dr. Boz teaches undergraduate and graduate-level courses on subjects relating to TESOL, Applied Linguistics, and English for Academic Purposes (EAP).

Research & Scholarly Activity

Dr. Boz’s scholarly interests lie primarily at the intersection of Applied Linguistics, Communication, and Second Language Education, with an emphasis on language use in collaborative learning settings. His research, in particular, explores learners’ interactional competencies in task-based and inquiry-based group work environments through the analysis of a set of sociolinguistic behaviors, such as topic control, task control, and formulaic language use. During his doctoral education, Dr. Boz worked on large-scale interdisciplinary research projects with scholars from Linguistics, Education, Communication, Computer Science, and Cognitive Psychology in an effort to explore and computationally model certain sociocultural and sociolinguistic phenomena in discourse, including leadership, influence, involvement, and metaphorical language use. His most recent collaborative work involves examining the relationship between group leadership and cognitive engagement in college students’ science inquiry discussions.
