Profile

Dr. Patterson attended university(and earned her BA and MA) in Ontario before moving to Sydney, Australia, where she was a Research Associate and Instructor at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital at the University of Sydney.

When she returned to Canada, she became an instructor, graduate faculty member and researcher at the University of Guelph, as well as a senior leader and director in Student Affairs, before moving to the University of Calgary in 1995 to become the Associate Vice President (Student Affairs) - a position she held until she became a full-time faculty member in the Faculty of Education.

Research & Scholarly Activity

Dr. Patterson’s primary areas of teaching, writing and scholarly activity have focused on, but have not been limited to: the experiences, learning and development of post-secondary students - longitudinally, as well as currently; the creation and support of healthy campus environments; teaching and learning in Higher Education; leaders, leadership and governance in Higher Education, and the evolution of the forms and functions of Higher Education in Canada.

She is has also been appointed to two associations to monitor the Quality of Higher Education (CAQC), as well as to develop and monitor Standards for Professional Practice (CAS).

Professional & Community Affiliations

Dr. Patterson is involved in national and international associations that focus on both the study of higher education and of students and student services, nationally and internationally. She also continues to participate in the leadership and direction of several associations, including her role as a Public Director on the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education, and as a member of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education.

Within Canada, she was names to the Campus Alberta Quality Council in 2008 by the Minister of Advanced Education, and in 2011 her term was extended to 2013.

  • 2007 Teaching Excellence Award, Graduate Student Association, University of Calgary – for excellence in graduate student supervision in recognition of valued contributions towards enriching the academic and personal lives of graduate students and for demonstrating unsurpassed enthusiasm for their work.
  • Peggy Patterson Awards - In recognition of Dr. Peggy Patterson’s contribution to the University of Calgary as Associate Vice President (Student Affairs) the SU created an award in her name as recognition of her dedication and unwavering support of students. Two - $3,000 awards have been given each year, beginning in 2005. The award is designed for students who face financial barriers and maintain a high academic standard.
  • Order of the University of Calgary – In recognition of exemplary and distinguished service to the University of Calgary - 2005
  • Dr. Ralph Steinhauer Award for contributions to the Native Centre at the University of Calgary, 2005
  • Presidential Citation - Students Union, The University of Calgary, in recognition of dedication, service, passion and commitment to the students of The University of Calgary, 1996, 2002 and 2005.
  • Award of Honour, Canadian Association of College and University Student Services – For Significant achievement and distinguished contribution to the development and promotion of Student Services in Canada, June 2001.
