Delivery Modes

1. What is meant by Distance delivery?

In Graduate Programs in Education (GPE) Distance delivery is comprised of three components:

  • Online (web based) - These courses occur 100% through online environments.
  • Blended - These courses have In-class and out-of-class learning which are integrated with synchronous (real time) and asynchronous (time independent) online activities along with access to online text-based learning materials; a reduction in in-class hours is a key characteristic of a hybrid model differentiating it from a traditional-blended model. A blended model does not require a reduction of in-class hours; however, hybrid models have reduced in-class hours.
  • Face-to-face off campus - These courses are traditional face-to-face courses with classes taking place in off campus sites, such as a school, community centre, etc.

2.  How is does GPE facilitate Distance delivery?

Two internet-based tools are utilized to deliver courses online: Desire2Learn and Adobe Connect. Students registered in online courses access Desire2Learng and Adobe Connect through myUofC. To learn more about the technology requirements for online courses and delivery tools, please go to elearn.ucalgary.ca.

3.  If I take an Distance program, do I have to come to campus?

The Doctor of Education (EdD) program requires two weeks of face-to-face study in the first year of program, and two weeks in the second year of program at the University of Calgary campus.

For course-based degrees online degrees such as the MC, MEd, Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate, please consult the Program Delivery section of the topic area you are interested in as delivery mode varies.
