Graduate Programs in Education - Open Studies Students

This page is intended for students interested in EDER (Educational Research) and EDPS (Educational Psychology) courses only. Other inquiries should be directed to Enrolment Services.

Information for Open Studies Students

At the University of Calgary, an Open Studies student is a student who is not admitted to a program leading to a degree or diploma but who is permitted to register in credit courses.

To take graduate level credit courses in the Werklund School of Education you must:

  • Have a four year bachelor's degree (normally).
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.00 calculated over the last 60 units (credits) attempted.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person.

Application and Registration Process (please note this information can also be found at

  1. To apply for open studies you must create an eID
  2. Complete the Open Studies Application
  3. Submit all transcripts and proof of English Language Proficiency 
  4. Pay a $125.00 non-refundable application fee. 

If you are unable to complete the online application please call +1.403.210.7625 to find out if alternative application methods are available.

  • After you have received confirmation of your application and are issued a student ID number view the Graduate Programs in Education Course Schedules pages for information on course offerings.
  • Contact Lisa Llewellyn at or 403.220.4394 in the graduate programs office to make your request for specific course availability

Note:  Priority for courses offered through the Graduate Programs in Education office is given for in-program Education students.  Other requests are considered beginning one month prior to the start of term.
