English Language Proficiency Requirement

1. What is the English Language Proficiency requirement?

English is the official language of instruction at the University of Calgary. All applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency to be considered for admission to an undergraduate program. English language proficiency is achieved by meeting one of the following criteria:

Successful completion of at least two years of formal, full-time study in English at an accredited or recognized post-secondary institution in Canada or a University of Calgary approved English-speaking country (see list of Exempt Countries).

For admission to graduate programs in the Werklund School of Education applicants are required to prove proficiency in English in one of the following ways:

  • a TOEFL score of at least 97 overall (Internet-based test) except for the Bridge to Teaching program which requires a TOEFL score of 98 overall.
  • a MELAB score of 82
  • an IELTS score of at least 7.0 overall is required
  • successful completion of Tier III of the International Foundations Program

Tests must have been taken within the two years prior to program application.
