IELTS

Submitted by srtariqu on Thu, 04/30/2015 - 12:47pm

IELTS is Canada’s most popular high-stakes English-Language test. Accepted as a proof of English proficiency for study at all universities and colleges in Canada, and for permanent residency and citizenship by provincial and federal governments, IELTS is the test that opens doors. The International Foundations Program at the University of Calgary is proud to offer the IELTS test.

Tests are offered in two formats: Academic and General Training.

The Academic format is applicable for post-secondary entrance, for graduate-level entrance requirements, and for membership in some professional organizations.

The General Training  format is focused on general survival skills for purposes of  secondary education, work experience or training programs in countries where English is the primary language. People migrating to Canada must take the General Training test.

IELTS Language Booster Workshops

We now offer IELTS Language Booster Workshops. Each workshop will be 2 or 3 hours long, and will focus on one skill area (e.g. Writing, Reading, Speaking or Listening). You will get hands-on practice in small groups and with an IELTS expert instructor. Workshops are in the Education Classroom Block on the university campus. Cost is $30 or $50 per workshop.

Date & Time Topic Cost
Wed. May 24 - 6:30 to 9:30 Speaking $50.00
Sat. May 27 - 09:00-12:00 Reading AC & GT $50.00
Wed. May 31 - 7:00 to 9:00 Writing Task 1 AC & GT $30.00
Sat. June 3 - 09:00-12:00 Listening $50.00
Wed. June 7 - 7:00 to 9:00 Writing Task 2 AC & GT $30.00

For more information: 403.220.2134.

*Please note: These workshops are intense, hands-on training sessions, and they will help you identify and improve specific language areas of weakness. However, they are only one evening, and they do not replace focused language courses. For more significant improvement in your scores, we recommend long-term language and test training and finding opportunities for meaningful language practice.

Preparation

The IELTS test is a challenging test. It is a test that measures your communication abilities, so having excellent English (through practice and/ or study) is the best way to improve your score. In addition, being familiar with the test questions and knowing the kinds of tasks you will be asked to is helpful.

IELTS offers some free and some paid test preparation online services here.

Refund and Transfer Policy

Refunds and transfers are not permitted within the five week period before the test. (i.e. You must give us at least 5 weeks’ notice to change your booking)

Even if a cancellation, refund or transfer occurs before this 5 week period, a $50.00 administration fee will still be applied.

In some exceptional circumstances (for example, medical emergency), a refund request may be made within the five week period before the test. This request must be submitted to the test center no later than five working days after the test date.

In such exceptional circumstances, candidates must complete a Request for Refund Form and attach appropriate documentation and/or evidence. Acceptable documents may include a medical certificate from a qualified medical practitioners, a death notice or certificate, or a police report. Please speak to our staff for specific documentation requirements. The center will charge an administrative fee of $50.00 for this service.

Example 1: Jose’s test is on September 3. Imagine he wants to cancel his test or take his test on a later date (transfer). If he makes this change on (or before) July 29, (which is more than 5 weeks before the test is scheduled) the center will process his request, but he will need to pay the $50 administration fee.

Example 2: Tran’s test is also on September 3. If she waits until July 30, to cancel her test, she will not get her money back because she is cancelling in less than 5 weeks before the test.

Example 3: Theresa was booked to do a test on September 3, but she was injured in a car accident shortly before the test and her doctor told her she could not write the test. If she provides all the appropriate documentation, including a note from her doctor and all the required forms, she will get her money back, but she will need to pay a $50 administration fee.
