Recognizing teaching excellence is one of the key tenets of the office of Teaching and Learning. To reach that goal, we can help you structure your application to several teaching and learning grants and awards.

Here are some Grants and Awards related to Teaching and Learning offered by our School, University, as well as national competitions.  Consider then as laddering system of recognition of your scholarship of teaching and learning. Click on any of the following sections for more information.

Internal Teaching and Learning Grants
Werklund School of Education

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

Description: To support and promote both greater engagement in the classroom and scholarly research around teaching and learning in higher education.

Value: $10,000 (up to three awards)

Application due date: August 25, 2017

Werklund Teaching and Learning Grant

Description:  To support investigation into teaching practices, tools, approaches and learner needs in relation to one of two streams: 1) Innovation in Teaching and Learning and 2) Cross-Cultural Competencies in Teaching and Learning. 

Value: Up to two (2) awards of $12,500 each

Internal Teaching and Learning Awards
Werklund School of Education

Teaching Excellence Award

Description:  Award to one academic staff member who demonstrates outstanding teaching and learning experiences.

Award: Up to $2,000 to be used towards attending a conference; name engraved on the Werklund Teaching Excellence Award plaque; letter of recognition

Application due date: May 1, 2017

Leadership in Teaching Award

Description: Award recognizes an academic staff member who demonstrates outstanding leadership and commitment to improving teaching and learning experiences in the School and in the profession.

Award: Up to $2,000 to be used towards attending a conference; letter of recognition.

University Teaching and Learning Grants

Practice Grants

Term: 1 year
Amount: $7,500

Lesson Plan Grants

Term: 1 or 2 years
Amount: Up to $10,000 per year to a maximum of $20,000

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Grants

Term: 1 or 2 years
Amount: Up to $10,000 per year to a maximum of $20,000 (collaborative teams may apply for double this amount).

University Teaching Awards

Curriculum Development

Description:  Recognizes the contributions of a team of academic and/or non-academic colleagues who contribute to the creation or major revitalization of a curriculum of a degree-credit program.

Educational Leadership (Formal, Informal, and Groups)

Description: Outstanding educational leadership of an individual or group that demonstrates formal or informal leadership in initiatives that have an impact on learning at a departmental, faculty and/or institutional level.

Experiential Learning Initiatives

Description: Teaching excellence of full-time colleagues on Continuing, Contingent and Limited-Term appointments, who have taught two or more courses that integrate experiential learning.

Full Time Academic Staff

Description:  Teaching excellence of full-time colleagues on Continuing, Contingent and Limited-Term appointments. Nominees must have three or more years’ teaching experience at the University of Calgary at the award rank selected.

Ranks: Assistant, Associate, Full Professor, Instructor, and Senior Instructor

Graduate Assistants

Description: Teaching excellence of graduate students who are employed as Graduate Assistants (Teaching) in undergraduate courses.

Graduate Supervision

Description: Excellence in graduate supervision. Full-time colleagues on Continuing, Contingent and Limited-Term appointments at any rank, who have five or more years’ experience in graduate supervision.

Librarians, Archivists, and Curators

Description: Outstanding contributions to student learning experiences by full-time librarians, archivists and curators on Continuing, Contingent and Limited-Term appointments.

Non-Academic Staff

Description: Outstanding contributions of non-academic, full-time staff who support student learning experiences at a departmental, faculty and/or institutional level.

Sessional Instructors

Description: Teaching excellence of colleagues on Sessional (formerly “Term-Certain”) appointments who have taught a minimum of two courses at the University of Calgary.

Teaching in Online Environments

Description: Teaching excellence of full-time colleagues on Continuing, Contingent and Limited-Term appointments who have developed and taught two or more different courses in blended or fully online environments, or integrated online learning environments as a significant element of two or more courses.

Team Teaching

Description: Teaching excellence of teams of two or more full-time colleagues on Continuing, Contingent and Limited-Term appointments who have contributed to the development and teaching of a team-taught course in disciplinary or interdisciplinary contexts, in online, blended or face-to-face formats. The team must have collaboratively developed and taught the course to the same group of students (i.e. in the same section).
