Dr. Anuradha Sengupta received her Ph.D. in Second Language Teaching & Learning/Second Language Literacy from Washington State University. Her doctoral research focused on academic English proficiency levels of international graduate students in the United States. Her Master’s degree focus was on ESL and Bilingual Education in Early Years Education (focus on K-3 curriculum development and pedagogical practices).

Dr. Sengupta was hired by the Faculty of Education (currently Werklund School of Education) in 2004 and became the Director of the International Foundations Program in January of 2006. She was the Director of IFP from 2006 – 2016 and was also appointed the Associate Dean of IFP in 2013 – 2016.

During her time in WSE, Dr. Sengupta has been involved with the creation of IFP’s Academic Plan, curriculum audit, program overhaul & restructuring,  vision/mission/values statement and program expansion into graduate seminars and IFP off shore programs on the U of C Doha, Qatar Campus (for the Faculty of Nursing), as well as spearheading practicum placements for Werklund School of Education M.Ed. In addition to her teaching and administrative duties, Dr. Sengupta has served on over a dozen University Committees and was invited by the Provost and Registrar in 2008 and again in 2014 to be critically involved in establishing the University’s policies and threshold requirements surrounding English Language Proficiency (ELP) Requirements for both Undergraduate and Graduate admissions.

In 2018 & 2019, Dr. Sengupta was accepted into the highly prestigious Professional Education/Leadership in Education series at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Currently, Dr. Sengupta most enjoys teaching her undergraduate and graduate courses in ELL/ESL methods, diversity education and assessment. She is also actively involved in helping to support new-commers, immigrant, and refugee students (and parents) navigate their way through the often challenging (K-12) school systems here in Calgary and across Alberta.
