Application Details

Applications to graduate degree programs in the Werklund School of Education will open on the date indicated in the program page. For more detailed information regarding admission requirements please visit the program page. Please note, applications to our programs are submitted online only. 

You will receive notification in writing from the Werklund School as soon as possible after a decision regarding admissibility is reached, normally 10-12 weeks after the application deadline date.

Submitting Transcripts

Applications, unofficial and/or official transcripts, and all supporting documents must be submitted 11:59 pm MT on the application deadline date for each program to be considered complete and move forward for academic review

While it is preferred that all official transcripts be received by the program application deadline date, for initial evaluation purposes, applicants may upload unofficial transcripts to their application.  After submitting your online application, you will automatically receive instructions on how to upload documents.  For Unofficial Transcripts to be used for initial evaluation purposes to process complete applications, please read the detailed information provided below in the Uploading Unofficial Transcripts section. 

If an offer of admission is endorsed by the GPE Admissions Committee, your offer of admission will be conditional upon the Faculty of Graduate Studies receiving all final official transcript(s), via email or in a sealed envelope(s) directly from the issuing institution(s), by a date specified in your formal offer letter.

Current and previous University of Calgary students and Alumni: are not required to order unofficial/official University of Calgary transcripts. 

UPLOADING UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS

Upload one copy of your unofficial transcripts with the following information:

  • Name and Student ID number
  • Program and Faculty
  • List of all courses registered in, attempted and/or completed
  • Grades received for courses attempted and/or completed
  • Grade point average (GPA) for each term
  • Units (credits) per course
  • Degrees awarded/conferred
  • Transfer credits received
  • Current academic standing and non-academic misconduct conditions
  • Grading scale/transcript legend

For all post-secondary institutions attended to your submitted application via your student center.  It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure these items are present on the unofficial transcript upload.  If any of these items are missing from your unofficial transcript upload, then your application may be deemed incomplete due to missing information.

Important Information: After you submit your online application, you will receive an email with your UCID number; and instructions on how to access your Student Centre where you will find a To Do list.  This is where you will upload your unofficial transcript(s) and other supporting documentation. For Domestic Applicants:  The unofficial transcript must clearly state the degree awarded.  If this is not clearly stated, then a copy of the degree certificate must be included with the unofficial transcript upload.  The unofficial transcript and degree certificate are uploaded as one PDF to your application.

For International Applicants:  The degree certificate must be included with the unofficial transcript upload.  The unofficial transcript and degree certificate are uploaded as one PDF to your application.

Document translation

If your original documents are not in English, you must request a second set of documents to be given to a translator for a notarized word-for-word English translation.

Transcript file(s), including English translations and/or degree certificates (if applicable), must be amalgamated into one PDF file per institution, and clearly outline the following:

  • terms
  • institution grading scale
  • course weight (units/credits)
  • grade

OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS TO FINALIZE YOUR ADMISSION:

Official transcripts provide a record of a student's academic history including courses taken and grades received up until the date it’s issued.  An official transcript includes the following information pertaining to the student at the time that it’s issued:

  • Name, student ID number and birthdate (day and month)
  • Program and faculty
  • List of all courses registered in, attempted and/or completed
  • Grades received for courses attempted and/or completed
  • Grade point average (GPA) for each term
  • Units (credits) per course
  • Degrees awarded
  • Transfer credits received
  • Honours and awards received
  • Current academic standing and non-academic misconduct conditions

Note: Your official transcript is a record of your academic activity, and it cannot be altered in any way.

Submit one official copy of your final official transcript(s) and degree certificate(s) (International – Required, Domestic – If degree is not clearly stated on transcripts) in signed, sealed envelopes from all institutions you attended by:

  • Email (directly from the issuing institution's transcript office) to gradtranscripts@ucalgary.ca.
  • Mail transcripts to:

 IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • Transcripts for courses taken at the University of Calgary are not required.
  • Official Transcripts may be sent to the Faculty of Graduate Studies from the institution or mailed to you and you can mail them to us yourself. 
  • Open official transcripts are not considered official.

English Language Proficiency Requirement

Proficiency in the English language is essential for the pursuit and successful completion of graduate programs in the Werklund School of Education. Prior to admission to Graduate Programs in Education, an applicant whose primary language is not English and who has not completed their post-secondary education in Canada in one of our official languages, may fulfill the English language proficiency requirement for academic purposes in one of the following ways:

in an institution where the sole language of instruction and examination is English. Eligible institutions must be listed as providing English language instruction in the World Higher Education Database (WHED). Search for eligible institutions  

English Language Proficiency Timeline: English Proficiency exams are valid for two years from the date of the test.

English Language Proficiency Deadline: All official test scores must be submitted to the Department to which you are applying directly by the testing agency by the application deadline.

  • TOEFL - Instructions to share TOEFL scores can be found on the ETS website. Ensure you indicate the Department Code associated with your program of interest. Department codes for TOEFL can be found in the TOEFL Information Bulletin

University of Calgary’s Institution code is 0813. If you are unable to share your IELTS score with the Faculty of Graduate Studies electronically, please share them to the Office of the Registrar. 

After your ELP test score reports are received by gradapp@ucalgary.ca:

You will receive an email from gradapp@ucalgary.ca with the following information: Your ELP score report has been uploaded to your file. The Educational Research Graduate Program (cc’d) will update your To Do List at a later date. If you have any further questions about your To Do List, please contact the Graduate Programs directly.

Graduate Programs in Education will not be accepting Duolingo for ELP purposes.
