Biography

Dr. Michele Jacobsen, PhD (Calgary) is a Professor in the Learning Sciences and a Teaching Scholar at the University of Calgary. Dr. Jacobsen's research focuses on design, learning and technology, with grant projects for online faculty development in graduate student experience surveys, quality graduate supervision, graduate student peer mentoring, and design based learning, technology and teaching in K-12, post-secondary and health care contexts and classrooms. Dr. Jacobsen has published 65 peer reviewed articles, 210+ blog posts, 29 book chapters, 47 conference papers, 244 conference presentations, and 5 books (20202021, 2022). Her 2006 book, "Learning Technology in Continuing Professional Development: The Galileo Network, emerged from practice and field-based research on leadership, learning, technology and professional development in nine Alberta schools.  Dr. Jacobsen has supervised 2 Post doctoral scholars, 25 doctoral and 10 masters students to the completion of their research, dissertations and theses. 

Dr. Jacobsen has received 17 awards for leadership, teaching, research and graduate supervision. She was granted the 2023 Distinguished Lecture Award and 2021 Research Excellence Award in the Werklund School of Education, a 2021 University of Calgary Teaching Award for Educational Leadership, with alumni Dr. Hawazen Alharbi, a 2020 U Make a Difference Award for Communication and Collaboration, the 2020 University of Calgary Teaching Award for Graduate Supervision, the 2019 Distinguished Graduate Supervision Award, Werklund School of Education, the 2018 GREAT Supervisor Award from the Faculty of Graduate Studies  the Werklund School of Education 2014 Excellence in Leadership Award, the Werklund School of Education Excellence in Teaching Awards in 2001 and 2012, and a Students Union Excellence in Teaching Award, Honorable Mention, in 2010.

Professional & Community Affiliations

Dr. Jacobsen is a Board Member with the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS), the Vice-President of the Open/Technology in Education, Society, and Scholarship Association (OTESSA), former Past President of the Canadian Association for Teacher Education (CATE), Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE), and a Lifetime Member of the EdCan Network and Canadian Educational Association. For 9 years, Dr. Jacobsen Chaired the CEA's Awards Committee for the Pat Clifford Early Career Award and Whitworth Career Scholar Award. Dr. Jacobsen is Co-Editor of OTESSA Journal, and served as Editor of The Canadian Journal of Learning and Technology (CJLT) (2005 - 2010).  Dr. Jacobsen is a member of several academic and professional organizations, such as the American Educational Research Association (AERA), Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT), the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE), the International Society for the Learning Sciences (ISLS), the Open/Technology in Education, Society, and Scholarship Association (OTESSA), and the Society for Academic Freedom and Scholarship (SAFS). 

Dr. Jacobsen is honoured to have served the Werklund School of Education as Vice Dean, Associate Dean Graduate Programs in Education, and Chair of Educational Technology.

Areas of Research

Scholarly Activity

Dr. Michele Jacobsen's program of research focuses on learning, technology, change and innovation. Dr. Jacobsen is a Learning Scientist who embraces and promotes inquiry on complex learners, learning systems and learning technologies in K-12, higher education, and health care using participatory research methodologies well-suited to evaluating change and innovation in education, such as design-based research and action research. Dr. Jacobsen analyzes, creates and evaluates innovative designs for learning that shift instruction from standardized delivery & testing towards open learning designs and participatory pedagogies that sponsor knowledge building and intellectual engagement. Current research collaborations focus on the power of peer mentorship for graduate students and post-doctorate scholars, caring professions education and practice, science and technology communication, and design-based research on the Quality Graduate Supervision MOOC (https://ucalgary.ca/graduate-supervision-mooc ).

The Quality Graduate Supervision MOOC (massive open online course) has been designed to support faculty members in enhancing their supervisory skills and practices through guided and self-paced online learning modules. Our online course brings the learning to the learners

Along with real-time and on-demand webinars, rich resources, engaging activities and interaction with supervisors from across disciplines, this online learning community includes the expertise, advice and perspectives of several award-winning graduate supervisors from six Canadian Universities to encourage further conversation among faculty members who share a common interest in quality graduate supervision.
