George Lane

The Haskayne School of Business is saddened to share the news of the passing of Dr. George Lane, PhD, professor emeritus, Haskayne School of Business.

Lane joined the University of Calgary in the early 1970s in the Faculty of Management (now the Haskayne School of Business) where he served for 19 years. He was dean from 1975 to 1981 during a formative time for business education at UCalgary. During his tenure, George was responsible for the initiatives which led to the funding and construction of Scurfield Hall and helped establish the MBA and PhD programs.

Lane’s ‘retirement’ included a business venture building townhomes and being elected as trustee for the Calgary Board of Education Wards 6 and 7, where he would serve from 2004 to 2013.

His Alberta roots trace back to the founding of the iconic Calgary Stampede. His grandfather, George Lane, worked his way up from foreman of the Bar U Ranch in Longview, eventually owning and operating the ranch which is now a Canadian National Historic Site. He was also one of the Big Four, the pioneering entrepreneurs who were instrumental in the beginnings of the Calgary Stampede.

You can read the his full obituary here.

The flag on UCalgary campus is located at Swann Mall.
