Important dates and considerations for Field Experience Placements

Important Dates in advance of Field Experience


EDUC 440 - Field Experience I

Length of placement: 2 weeks

Full-time, Monday-Friday participation is required. 

Dates: October 10-20, 2023

Registration Considerations: Remember to register in EDUC 440 if participating in Field Experience I. 

  • Calgary & Area placement sites are informed by the EDUC 430 section you have enrolled in. Please refer to the Registration Guide - On-Campus for details. 
  • Out of Area placement sites are informed by your Placement Request form submission. This form will open in May 2023 and will be open to you after you have registered in EDUC 440.

Field Experience Seminars: The Field Experience Seminars are considered an integral part of the field experience and attendance is mandatory. Seminar details will be confirmed by your Field Instructor. 

  • Calgary & Area Seminars: Your seminars will take place during your Field Experience, while in your placement school. 
  • Out of Area Seminars: Your seminars will take place during your Field Experience, while in your placement school, via Zoom. 

Seminar and Instructor assignment: Section assignment and seminars are determined by your placement location, not your pathway. Regardless of your Community-based or On-campus pathway, your Field Experience Field Instructor and Section assignment will either "Calgary & Area" or "Out of Area". 

    Considerations: Field Experience will take place in schools, in person for all students. Field Experience I, II, III, IV students do not follow university breaks, including term breaks. They should refer to their placement school calendar. 

    EDUC 465: Field Experience II

    Length of Placement: 4 weeks

    Full-time, Monday-Friday participation is required. 

    Dates: March 11 - April 19, 2024

    Field II is four weeks. Start and end dates will depend on the timing and duration of the Spring holiday at each school. Ensure that you are available for the entirety of the six weeks stated. The first possible day in your placement school will be March 12. 

    Seminars: The Field Experience Seminars are considered an integral part of the field experience and attendance is mandatory. Seminar dates will be confirmed in the course outline. Seminar details will be confirmed by your Field Instructor. Please ensure you are available to attend the seminars. Seminar details will be shared once your placement is confirmed. 

    • Calgary & Area Seminars: These are considered "University Days" - you are expected to be on-campus and available for the full day, for both seminars. In addition to attending your seminar, you are expected to spend your additional time preparing for Field Experience while on-campus. Anticipated Seminar I and II Date & Times: March 11 and April 19. 
    • Out of Area Seminars: These are considered "University Days" - you are expected to be available for the full day, for both seminars. In addition to attending your seminar, you are expected to spend your additional time preparing for Field Experience. Your field seminars will be held via Zoom. Anticipated Seminar I and II Date & Times: March 11 and April 19.

    EDUC 540: Field Experience III

    Length of Placement: 6 weeks

    Full-time, Monday-Friday participation is required. 

    Dates: October 30 - December 15, 2023

    Field III is six weeks. Please ensure that you are available for the entirety of the seven weeks stated.

    • October 30 - November 5: Advance week to prepare for Field Experience III.
    • November 6: First practicum day in your placement school.

    Seminars: The Field Experience Seminars are considered an integral part of the field experience and attendance is mandatory. Seminar dates will be confirmed in the course outline. Seminar details will be confirmed by your Field Instructor. Please ensure you are available to attend the seminars. Seminar details will be shared once your placement is confirmed. 

    • Calgary & Area Seminars: These are considered "University Days" - you are expected to be on-campus and available for the full day, for both seminars. In addition to attending your seminar, you are expected to spend your additional time preparing for Field Experience while on-campus. Anticipated Seminar I & II: November 2 and November 24. 
    • Out of Area Seminars: These are considered "University Days" - you are expected to be available for the full day, for both seminars. In addition to attending your seminar, you are expected to spend your additional time preparing for Field Experience. Your field seminars will be held via Zoom. Anticipated Seminar I & II: November 2 and November 24.

    EDUC 560: Field Experience IV

    Length of Placement: 8 weeks

    Full-time, Monday-Friday participation is required.

    Dates: February 12 - April 26, 2024

    Field IV is eight weeks. Ensure that you are available for the entirety of the eleven weeks stated.

    • February 12-18: Advance week to prepare for Field Experience IV. 
    • February 19: First practicum day in your placement school*. 

    *Start and end dates will depend on the timing and duration of the relevant Teachers' Convention and Spring holiday at each school.

Seminar details will be confirmed by your Field Instructor. Please ensure you are available to attend the seminars.

    • Calgary & Area Seminars: The first two seminars are considered "University Days" - you are expected to be on-campus and available for the full day. In addition to attending your seminar, you are expected to spend your additional time preparing for Field Experience while on-campus. Anticipated full-day seminar dates: February 14 and March 8. The final seminar will be an hour long, online seminar. Anticipated final seminar: April 26
    • Out of Area Seminars: The first two seminars are considered "University Days" - you are expected to be available for the full day. In addition to attending your seminar, you are expected to spend your additional time preparing for Field Experience. Your field seminars will be held via Zoom. Anticipated full-day seminar dates: February 14 and March 8. The final seminar will be an hour long, online seminar. Anticipated final seminar: April 26

    Field Experience Seminars

    Seminar Topics

    The first field seminar will give the Field Experience Instructor an opportunity to discuss the field experience and go over expectations and responsibilities as well as provide Pre-service Teachers with an opportunity for clarification. Field Seminars also occur at the conclusion of the field experience and will provide an opportunity for Pre-service Teachers to discuss their experiences and address topics needing supplementation. The final field experience in Field Experience IV will be dedicated to topics of import to a first-year teacher.

    Section assignment and seminars are determined by your placement location, not your pathway. Regardless of your Community-based or On-campus pathway, your Field Experience Field Instructor and Section assignment will either "Calgary & Area" or "Out of Area".

    On-Campus Seminars

    If your placement is in "Calgary and Area" and you are in the community-based or on-campus program, your Field Instructor assignment will be with the Calgary and Area cohort. Seminars are generally scheduled during the day and are in-person, on-campus as arranged by your Field Instructor. 

    Online Seminars

    If your placement is "Out of Area" and you are in the community-based or on-campus program, your Field Instructor assignment will be with the Out of Area cohort. Seminars are generally scheduled during the day and are online, as arranged by your Field Instructor.
