Submitted by msoos on Thu, 07/28/2011 - 3:05pm

The Doctor of Education (EdD) is a dissertation-based degree program is designed for practicing professionals in education-related occupations and organizations. The EdD program focuses on developing scholars of the profession who lead research informed and research active change and innovation in education. The EdD is a cohort based program that is compatible with the busy lifestyles of professionals in education and education related fields of study who may continue to work in their communities while developing new leadership skills, engaging in scholarly discourse, and carrying out field focused research.

Structured as a blended, three year program that includes course work, candidacy and dissertation, students have up to six years to complete all degree requirements.

  • Year 1, which involves a two week residency at the University of Calgary, is designed primarily to develop students’ competencies as ‘critical consumers of educational research” and to develop skills to conduct practitioner-inquiry.
  • Year 2, which includes a second, two week residency at the University of Calgary, is designed to engage students in an in-depth analysis of an identified problem of practice in their specialized academic disciplines.
  • Year 3 has been designed to support students in synthesizing their Year 2 inquiry projects into a dissertation. EdD students work collaboratively with faculty and practitioners from their field to complete a dissertation that addresses a contemporary issue in education.
