Werklund School Graduate Awards

The Werklund School of Education has several awards available specifically to our graduate students. Please find them listed below.

Werklund School of Education Awards application procedure:

Applications for the Werklund School of Education Awards in Graduate Programs in Education are adjudicated based on general academic excellence (i.e., GPA) and the degree to which applicants meet eligibility criteria specified by donors of each award.

IMPORTANT:  Applicants must meet award criteria at the time when the award is paid, not at the time of submitting the application.  Werklund School of Education awards are paid starting in the Fall session (September onward).

Unless otherwise specified, preference for the awards will be given to MA/MSc and PhD students who hold residency on-campus during their tenure.

A complete application consists of a) your current program transcript, b) a curriculum vitae that includes previous awards, research experience, and volunteer experience, and c) completion of the Werklund School of Education award application in Elevate.  Ensure that your application includes a statement demonstrating how you meet the terms of reference for the award.

Reference letters are not required unless specified by the terms of reference of the award to which you are making application.

The Anita K. F. Li Graduate Scholarship is open to candidates who at the time of application are registered full-time in a graduate specialization in Educational Psychology and have completed at least one four-month term of graduate work at UCalgary. The award is based on academic merit and involvement in activities contributing to graduate student well being.

The Denise H. S. Owen Scholarship is open to students registered full-time in a graduate specialization in the Educational Psychology Program.

Open to students registered full-time in the first semester of a master’s program in the Department of Educational Psychology.

The Helen McWilliam Memorial Scholarship is open to students registered full-time in the School Psychology graduate specialization of the Educational Psychology Program.

Applications should be made at the end of the first academic year.

The Joe Woodsworth Memorial Scholarship is open to students registered full-time in a doctoral specialization in the Educational Psychology Program. Selection will be based on grades and letters of reference. 

Open to students enrolled in a full-time graduate program in the Faculty of Law; or doctoral program in the Faculty of Nursing; or Counselling Psychology program in the Department of Educational Psychology (EDPS). The next time students enrolled in our EDPS Counselling Psychology program can apply for this award is the February 1, 2025, application close date.

The Robert and Anne DeWitt Graduate Scholarship is open to students registered full-time in the first year of a thesis-based program in the Master of Science in Counselling Psychology and Master of Science in School and Applied Child Psychology at the Werklund School of Education.

The Robert M.S. Owen Award is open to students entering the first year of a full-time course-based Master of Education program in Educational Psychology.

The W. R. Unruh Scholarship is open to students registered full-time in a thesis-based graduate specialization in the Educational Psychology Program

The Christiane Adèle Roy Scholarship is open to students registered in a graduate program in the Werklund School of Education. Candidates must demonstrate their commitment and contributions to underprivileged children in the community.

The Donna B Rediger Graduate Scholarship is open to students registered in a master’s program in the Werklund School of Education.

The Nora Green Memorial Graduate Education Award is open to students registered full-time in a master’s program in the Werklund School of Education. Candidates must submit a one-page statement demonstrating their interest in the designing, teaching or learning of Teaching English as a second or additional language.

Open to students registered full-time in a thesis-based graduate program in the Werklund School of Education.
Candidate’s research must focus on gender, sexuality, or race (or the intersection of these) as applied to education for social justice.

The Werklund School of Education Endowment Graduate Scholarship is open to students registered full-time in a doctoral program in the Werklund School of Education who have not yet completed candidacy examinations. The Annette LaGrange Graduate Scholarship is open to students registered full-time in a thesis-based degree in the Educational Research Program.

The Dr. Bonnie L. Shapiro Distinguished Faculty Achievement Graduate Scholarship is open to students registered full-time in a thesis-based degree in the Educational Research Program. Master’s students must be in the second year of a thesis-based program; doctoral students must have completed the candidacy examination process. 

The Dr. Michael C. Pyryt Memorial Graduate Scholarship is open to students registered in a thesis-based degree in the Educational Research Program. Candidates' research must be focused on gifted learners.

The E Lisa Panayotidis Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Interdisciplinary Educational Research is open to students registered full-time in the doctoral program in the Werklund School of Education who are in their second or third year of study.

The Ethel King-Shaw Doctoral Scholarship in Literacy is open to students registered full-time in a doctoral program in the Werklund School of Education.

Candidates' research must focus on early years English language learning and development or on teaching strategies that improve literacy abilities of young children.

Students may be awarded the scholarship only once.

The Gifted Studies Graduate Scholarship is open to students registered full-time in a graduate program in the Curriculum and Learning specialization offered through the Educational Research Program. The Hopewell Graduate Scholarship in Language and Literacy is open to students registered full-time in the first year of a graduate program in Educational Research, with a specialization in language and literacy. Jim Brandon possessed the traits of a true educational leader: a coalition builder, capacity-oriented, invitational, complimentary and supportive, and as a person he possessed integrity and unbridled kindness. This scholarship has been created as a tribute to the man, the scholar, and the leader.

The Richard Hirabayashi Graduate Scholarship is open to students registered in a graduate program in the Werklund School of Education.

The Sharon Aikenhead Waugh Memorial Scholarship is open to students registered full-time in a thesis-based specialization in the Educational Research Program who have completed at least two graduate courses.

The Ves Thomas Memorial Scholarship is open to students registered full-time in a graduate specialization in the Educational Research Program.
