Building Teacher Assessment and Data Literacy in the AI Era
Applications are open November 1 to February 1
Program Overview
The program aims to help prepare K-12 teachers and school leaders to navigate the constantly changing complexities of classroom assessment practices and policies in an AI-infused era.
Upon completion of the program, graduates:
- Will be prepared to lead assessment and grading innovation and policymaking to support teaching and learning in the current AI era
- Will possess cutting-edge knowledge and skills required to select, design, adapt, implement, and evaluate GenAI-enhanced assessment tasks and rubrics
- Will be competent in designing AI-assisted grading, feedback, and reporting tools, and in adopting relevant practices to enhance student learning
- Will be capable of analyzing, interpreting, and using AI-driven data to support instructional practice and student learning in AI-rich classroom environments
Program Details
AI-driven assessment innovations are evolving from simply detecting plagiarism and safeguarding academic integrity to completely reimagining how students’ understanding is captured and how real-time feedback is shared to enhance their learning experiences. The four courses in this program focus on a nexus between theory and practice. After completing the courses, you will be equipped with the assessment and data literacy needed to navigate rapidly evolving AI assessment innovations and complex learning environments. Benefits will include increased confidence while engaging in discourse and leading initiatives on AI-driven assessment and grading innovations, as well as greater empowerment to design high-quality assessment tasks and rubrics enhanced by GenAI.
This program is for educators, instructional designers, and educational technologists who want to explore the different ways in which generative AI lives in various educational contexts. Given that this program addresses the growing need for professionals who can navigate the intersection of artificial intelligence and education, those interested in human-centered design principles, ethical considerations, and pedagogical practices would find this program a good fit.
A registration package will be sent to new students after they have been admitted. Registration for the summer term will be available in late winter. Fall and Winter registration opens in the spring. Your Graduate Program Administrator will send more information about registration to you.
Fee details are available through the University Calendar. An explanation of fees is available on the Faculty of Graduate Studies' website.

Program Schedule & Course Descriptions
- Program begins each Summer term (refer to the Academic Schedule for specific dates)
- Outlines are normally available 1-2 weeks prior to the start of term in D2L
- 3 units per course
Term 1 - Summer
Assessment and Data Literacy in AI-Rich Learning Environments
EDER 679.70
In this course, students will reflect on and discuss the fundamental concepts and principles of assessment and data literacy in AI-rich learning environments. Topics include design of authentic and formative assessments that blend teachers’ judgements with GenAI tools; analysis, interpretation, and use of student data to inform teaching and learning.
Term 2 - Fall
Developing Teachers’ Capacity in GenAI-Enhanced Assessment
EDER 679.71
Students will learn the design principles for GenAI-enhanced assessment tasks and rubrics by participating in the design, selection, and adaptation of assessment tasks and rubrics to measure students’ competencies in a chosen subject. Their design will be guided by a SMART-AIQ framework and the core principles of equity and inclusion.
Term 3 - Winter
AI-Assisted Grading, Feedback, and Reporting
EDER 679.72
Data-literate teachers need to continuously, effectively, and ethically access, interpret, act on, and communicate multiple types of data from different levels: classroom, provincial, national, and international. The course will focus on the use of GenAI to evaluate student work, provide personalized feedback, and ensure accuracy and fairness in reporting.
Term 4 - Spring
Integrating GenAI, Data Literacy, and Innovative Assessment
EDER 679.73
By integrating GenAI, data literacy, and innovative assessment design in familiar subject areas, it empowers teachers who may not have a background in computer science to uncover the affordances of the intersection of technology, data, and assessment. Instead of passive users of AI tools, teachers will become active creators of engaging, personalized learning experiences for students.
