Consultation begins on development of the Academic and Research Plans, for the next five years
Since 2011, the University of Calgary has been on a journey toward a bold vision to be a top five research university in Canada. Recently, our Eyes High strategy for 2017-2022 was shared with our community, which will guide our priorities and initiatives until 2022. Our commitment to research and scholarship, the quality and breadth of learning, our connection to community, as well as student experience and campus culture, sets us up for success over the next half-century.
Fundamental to Eyes High are the Academic and Research Plans — roadmaps that set specific priorities, strategies and initiatives that we will accomplish in the next five years that help us achieve our vision. The development process is led by Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Dru Marshall and Vice-President (Research) Ed McCauley, ensuring that integration and collaboration between the plans is at the forefront.
“This is another step in the evolution of the University of Calgary in being a world leader in research, scholarship and learning,” says Marshall. “As we refocus to support and advance Eyes High, the Academic and Research Plans will encourage discovery, creativity and innovation in our teaching, our student experience and the research we conduct.”
The Academic and Research Plans provide guidance to faculties, departments and administrative units in their own annual planning to focus human, financial and capital resources in the right places for the most impact.
“As the University of Calgary continues to be a research leader, we need to encourage the entrepreneurial thinking set forward in the renewed Eyes High strategy,” says McCauley. “This is an excellent opportunity to take account of our environment and make the necessary refinements to reinforce our position as a top five research university in Canada.”
The plans will be informed by an interactive process that includes robust feedback from our community members, data from the Eyes Highconsultation and survey feedback. The survey is open to all campus community members and will close on June 23.
Throughout the fall, there will be a number of opportunities to share further comments and feedback, before the Academic and Research Plans are submitted for formal approval to the Board of Governors in December.
