Speaker Bios

Yaser Rahmaniani, PhD
Architect, researcher, and educator with a PhD in Architecture. He is currently pursuing a Master of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary, having transitioned from a second PhD to focus on practice-based research in sustainable housing and climate-adaptive design.

Luis D. Virla, PhD
Assistant Professor in Sustainable Systems Engineering at the University of Calgary, with over 15 years of experience in carbon management and energy transitions. Luis leads research on accelerating sustainable transitions with a focus on the human dimensions in engineering. He holds a PhD, MSc, and BSc in Chemical Engineering.

Summer Okibe, LLB, LLM, MBA
Internationally trained lawyer and Policy Analyst with Alberta’s Ministry of Energy & Minerals. Summer holds a Bachelor of Law, a Barrister-at-Law, a Masters in Law, and an MBA. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Energy,Environmental & Indigenous Law at the University of Victoria, with a focus on climate change. Summer has lived experiences of housingsustainability challenges, which she will share during the event.

This event is for K-12 and post-secondary students, educators, researchers, advocates, community members, industry experts, and anyone interested in learning more about housing sustainability from an educational viewpoint.
After listening and engaging with a series of speakers, participants will have an opportunity to share ideas and brainstorm possible solutions to start thinking about the housing sustainability issues. You can be a beginner or novice, we want people excited to be a part of the conversation!
This event is free! All you have to do is register to ensure we account for the capacity of the Hunter Hub Collision Space (4th Floor)
We hope to continue this work into 2026. This is a transdisciplinary project bringing experts and researchers together from multiple domains to help increase educational awareness of the housing sustainability challenges.
