Thinking Historically for Canada’s Future

Pursue your doctoral studies in pedagogy and history with a community of leading scholars

Apply for the Thinking Historically for Canada’s Future Scholarship at UCalgary’s Werklund School of Education. This is a unique opportunity for a doctoral student to collaborate with a pan-Canadian network of scholars to produce transformational research with real-world impact at the intersection of history education, pedagogy, and curriculum in a Canadian context. The successful applicant will work on a range of research projects, present at conferences and symposia, and publish findings in scholarly and professional spaces.

The partnership grant brings together experts in history education including academic historians, scholars of history education and Indigenous studies, graduate students, museum educators, teachers, government, policy makers, and local, provincial and national history and heritage organizations.

Through this research you will:

  • map the terrain of history education in K–12;
  • ascertain how well history and social studies teaching helps students engage with key issues facing Canadian society;
  • identify and develop evidenced-based practices in history teaching, learning, assessment, and resource development, and evaluate their efficacy in providing powerful and engaging learning experiences for students, particularly in terms of building trans-systemic understanding across knowledge systems;
  • cultivate and assess the impact of communities of practice that are grounded in theoretical and empirical research on history education pedagogy to promote engaged and critical historical thinking; and
  • using findings that emerge from the research, make evidence-based policy recommendations for history curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment through proactive connections with ministries of education, faculties of education, museum educators, Indigenous organizations and stakeholders, publishers, other curriculum developers, and practicing teachers.

This opportunity includes attendance at one or more conferences such as the Canadian Society for the Study of Education, along with participation in the annual Thinking Historically for Canada's Future SSHRC Partnership meeting hosted by the Association for Canadian Studies. All expenses are paid by the Association for Canadian Studies.
