UCalgary veterinary sciences and sports-related subjects among top in the world

QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020 released

The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking helps prospective students identify the world's leading schools in their chosen fields. Earlier this month, QS released their World University Rankings by Subject 2020, which ranks the world’s top universities in 48 subject areas.

UCalgary’s veterinary science subject area ranked number two in Canada and moved up five spots to place 42nd internationally this year

The rankings also placed UCalgary’s sports-related subject area number four nationally and 19th in the world, up from number six nationally and 30th in the world in the 2019 ranking.

Other subject areas that finished in the top 50 internationally include archaeology and hospitality and leisure management (Haskayne School of Business, Kinesiology and the Faculty of Arts). UCalgary’s anatomy and physiology subject area also ranked among the top 100 in the world for 2020.

Subjects are ranked on four criteria: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper, and H-index, a measure of scholarly productivity. Weightings vary from subject to subject with academic reputation being weighted most heavily (between 30 and 90 per cent).

QS derives its reputational scores from its annual surveys with employers and academics, where respondents are asked to rate top schools in various subject areas.
