It is a not-for-profit society and registered charity. Renfrew offers a broad range of specialized programs and is an acknowledged leader in program development for children with special needs. Highly trained teams of professional staff continually search for the most effective teaching and learning methods. Individualized learning strategies are developed to help each child grow to their potential.
Early Childhood Services (ECS) Program
The ECS program provides support for children (2.8 to 5 years old) with mild to severe special needs within an educational setting.
Elementary Education Program (EEP)/Junior High Program
The Elementary and Junior High Program provides developmentally appropriate learning opportunities for students (i.e., 6 to 14 years old) with moderate to severe special needs.
What's Involved
- Follow the course objectives.
- Work in the classroom with students.
- Lead small groups.
- Plan a small or large group activity under the supervision of the teacher.
Note:
All the programs are play based. All adults in the room are active participants with the children.
Requirements
Pre-service teachers need a current Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (one calendar year accepted). Students who do not already have a police check should begin this process at their local police station as soon as possible, as police checks often take 4-6 weeks to process.
For the Community Partner:
- Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
- Intervention Record Check/Child Welfare Check.
- Proof of double vaccination.
- Apply a variety of teaching strategies to meet the needs of individual learners in different educational settings
- Design and implement a variety of activities that meet students’ interests and learning needs
- Gain experience working with youth in a classroom setting
- Gain experience working with youth in a small group setting

- Mornings (ECS): 8:20 AM - 11:35 AM
- Afternoons (ECS): 12:40 PM - 3:55 PM
- Days (EPP): 8:20 AM - 3:55 PM
- Non-instructional days: January 27, February 16, and February 17.
- Spring Break: March 27 to April 10.
Note: In total, pre-service teachers agree to commit to a minimum of 20 hours for their service-learning experience.

Making Connections
- Pre-service teachers will participate in 2 group meetings: one at the mid-point and another at the end of their placement (1 hour each). These group meetings provide pre-service teachers with opportunities to reflect on the community placement experience and to guide improvements for the program.
