Change of Teachable Application
Application Information
Applications Open: Tuesday, October 22nd, at 12.00pm (Noon)
Applications Close: Tuesday, November 12th, at 12.00pm (Noon)
Late applications will not be accepted, in order to ensure an equitable process for all students!
Please read the below information – you will be asked to confirm that you have read and understand all of this information on the web-form when you submit your application!
Important Information for All Students
- You must meet all admitting requirements for your desired Teachable Subject Area, including course/degree content (Ie, If you apply for Secondary - Biology, but have never taken a Biology course, you will not be considered).
- There must be seats available in your desired area - we cannot overload teachables!
- You can pick a first and second choice: if you are not admissible to your first choice, we will consider you for your second.
- Application decisions are final. If you are hoping to move out of your current area, please ensure to select a back-up option, per above.
- This process can be very competitive, especially for teachables that are in high demand - again, approval is dependent upon available space!
- This process does not support a change of pathway, Ie, From the Four-Year to Concurrent, etc, and you will not be given the option to submit such request. If this is of interest to you, you likely need to discuss a Change of Program application with an advisor (and whether or not you are still eligible).
- We will let you know, around the end of November, if your request has been approved, after which you will be able to make any necessary changes to your Winter 2025 course registration.
- Please do not make changes to your Winter registration until you have confirmation that you have been approved for a change (you might accidentally drop a mandatory class, and not be able to get back in)!
- We will notify the Field Team of all successful applicants, so that your Field Placements can be adjusted accordingly.
- DO NOT submit a Change of Program through your Student Services Centre. It will not initiate the Change of Teachable Subject Area process - in fact, we will not even know that you have requested a change!
- We definitely appreciate that it would be ideal for you to get into your desired teachable. If your application is unsuccessful, keep in mind that you will still receive Kindergarten to Grade Twelve certification upon graduation. We would also highly encourage you to consider any of the supplementary Student Opportunities that will help you round out your degree experience, and propel you into a great career! Take advantage of your common courses (including the EDUC 56X series in your Winter 500s) and Field Experience placements to liaise with students, instructors, staff members, and practitioners who currently work or are involved with your ideal teachable.
- If you are unsuccessful in your application, you will remain in your current Teachable Subject Area - please do not list your current Area as your back-up option.
- Due to high demand and oversubscribed programs, we have, unfortunately, been unable to accommodate many requests in recent years. Please plan and anticipate accordingly.
Eligibility Information
On-Campus Four-Year Pathway
Students who have - or are close to completing - all non-Education courses should be aware that changing their teachable might mean that they no longer meet degree requirements. We will not make exceptions to Teachable Subject Area courses: if you are planning to apply to change into an entirely different area, please consult with the Advising Team as to how that may impact your degree. You may still be eligible for a Change of Program process prior to taking EDUC 460: Specialization I, depending upon the order in which you are taking your courses. Again, please consult with an Advisor as to programmatic change eligibility.
Community-Based Four-Year Pathway
Students who have completed a number of courses towards their teachable will want to consider the implications for changing teacahbles in terms of their remaining non-education requirements. If you are interested in a change after this date, but prior to taking EDUC 460: Specialization I, you will need to consider the Change of Program process. Please consult with an Advisor to ensure that you understand how a later change my impact your degree.
Concurrent Pathway
Your desired Teachable Subject Area must also correspond with your current co-degree, per the approved degree combinations chart (see the Admissions tab). If you are planning to change both your teachable and co-degree major, you must have your co-faculty Advisors email us at upe@ucalgary.ca confirming that you are both eligible for, and have the graduating degree requirements for, a new co-degree.
This is your last opportunity to change your teachable. Teachables cannot be changed after your second term of 400-level courses has commenced.
On-Campus After-Degree Pathway
This is your last opportunity to change your teachable. Teachables cannot be changed after your second term of 400-level courses has commenced.
Community-Based After-Degree Pathway
As you have already completed EDUC 460: Specialization I, you are ordinarily ineligible for a Change of Teachable Subject Area. Exceptional cases should be directed to the Advisors via upe@ucalgary.ca for further discussion of eligibility. Submitted applications will only be considered if there is an email thread confirming that the application has been allowed.
