Indigenous Literatures for Learning Workshop

Aubrey and Erin in the library

The Books to Build On: Indigenous Literatures for Learning workshop is intended to equip participants with all necessary tools and information to weave Indigenous ways of knowing through story. As pre-service teachers, weaving Indigenous ways of knowing and text in your teaching is essential and this database will assist you no matter what your comfortability with Indigenous texts is. Additionally, as a pre-service teacher, you are required to demonstrate competency five of the Teaching Quality Standard (TQS),  “A teacher develops and applies foundational knowledge about First Nations, Métis and Inuit for the benefit of all students.”

This interactive workshop will introduce you to an ever-evolving online database designed to make Indigenous literature and accompanying unit and lesson plans more accessible. This database is an extremely complementary tool for this competency and for your teaching practice in general as you weave Indigenous stories into your lessons and your life. In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to interact with co-leads and/or project members who will share the background, intention, and purpose of the database. From there, the workshop host(s) will demonstrate how to locate various Indigenous texts and accompanying lesson and unit plans through the user-friendly search portal. Additionally, participants will gain the opportunity to try it themselves and build connections on how it may be used in the future and present professional or personal lives.
