Dr. J. K. Mulloy is an elementary school within the CBE, that offers the Traditional Learning Program for students in kindergarten - grade 4.  We are located in the NW community of Huntington Hills, and have over 520 students from diverse backgrounds, many of whom reside in communities outside of the school walk zone, and rely on school bus services.

Volunteers support grade 1 students as they complete hands-on math and literacy activity stations that are organized by the classroom teacher.

When?

Minimum commitment of 2 hours per week; times and days scheduled around volunteer availability

What's Involved

The grade one team at Dr. J.K. Mulloy School organizes students into learning pods of 3-5 children for a period of time each day. The pods complete targeted math, reading, and writing activity stations that are set up in their classroom. 

Volunteers will:

  • run each station
  • provide immediate, meaningful feedback for students
  • receive materials and training
  • learn about the Science of Reading, classroom management, math manipulatives and differentiated instruction
  • experience practical, hands-on learning for pre-service teachers.

Reference letters will be available upon request following the completion of a term.

Requirements

Must have completed a police information check with a vulnerable sector check.  The date on this check must be no later than 6 months before the volunteer start date. 


Program Learning Outcomes

  • Apply a variety of teaching strategies to meet the needs of individual learners in different educational settings
  • Examine how programs and educators create communities that are conducive to teaching and learning
  • Examine how programs develop students’ literacies (reading, writing, numeracy, digital, etc.)
  • Gain experience working with youth in a classroom setting
  • Gain experience working with youth in a small group setting
  • Share and receive knowledge regarding teacher education and teaching practice

Classroom Volunteering Dates

  • Program Dates:
    • Fall: early October to mid- December
    • Winter: early January to mid-March
  • Session-specific training available before each session
  • The program takes place during school hours

In total, pre-service teachers agree to commit to a minimum of 20 hours for their service-learning experience

  • Fall 2025 Applications Close: September 18, 2025 for smaller programs, larger placement applications are ongoing.
  • Fall 2025 Placements Start: early October (program dependent)
  • Fall 2025 Placements End: mid-December (program dependent)

  • Winter 2026 Information Session: November 18, 4:00 pm (Zoom)

Experiential Learning Check-In & Reflection Opportunities

All participants in Experiential Learning programs are welcome and encouraged to attend at least two of the check-in & reflection sessions below as part of their program. Reflection is an incredibly important part of experiential learning. It encourages students to consider their experience so far and to adjusted as needed as they go forward through the rest of their program, or into the next step of their career.
