PREP (Pride, Respect, Empowerment, Progress)

PREP (Pride, Respect, Empowerment, Progress)

PREP (Pride, Respect, Empowerment, Progress) is a not-for-profit organization that provides innovative educational and therapy services to children with Down syndrome. PREP has the privilege of accompanying parents on the challenging, yet ultimately rewarding, journey of parenting a child with special needs. We believe in “inclusion for life” that starts in the home, continues in school and community, and ultimately leads to the workplace.

Participating pre-service teachers will contribute to PREP 3, an elementary program for students aged 6-12. PREP 3 supports students as they transition from early childhood programs to school, focusing on literacy and speech and language development. Pre-service teachers will also have the opportunity to experience other PREP programs based on their interests, including the Mavericks Every Child a Reader (MECAR) program, which provides individualized reading instruction, as well as PREP 4, a junior and senior high school program that focuses on speech-language therapy, transition planning, and self-advocacy.

What's Involved

  • Pre-service teachers will participate in a training session at the PREP office, to be scheduled based on participant availability.
  • Pre-service teachers will be matched to PREP at an organizational level, allowing them to experience multiple PREP programs, learning how students progress through each program and gaining a better understanding of how PREP supports students, their parents, and the community.
  • In PREP 4, pre-service teachers will work alongside PREP staff to support bi-weekly classes that focus on literacy and speech and language development.
  • Pre-service teachers will also have the opportunity to support PREP 3 MECAR reading sessions. Reading sessions are 1-on-1 at the level of the student. A PREP reading tutor and the student's parent(s) will also be present. Participants will also be involved in homework planning and some report writing based on their reading sessions.
  • PREP will provide reading and tutoring resources for all sessions.

Requirements

Pre-service teachers need a current Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (issued after July 1, 2021). Students who do not already have a police check should begin this process at their local police station as soon as possible, as police checks often take 4-6 weeks to process.

PLEASE NOTE

PREP is, proportionally, our most popular program. If you are interested in partnering with PREP, we strongly recommend you also rank other organizations in your Top 3 so that if we are unable to place you with PREP, that we can place you with another organization that meets your needs.

Making Connections

  • Throughout the semester, pre-service teachers will curate their volunteering experiences using a creative medium (e.g., photos, art, storyboarding, videos, etc.) that best reflects their experiences in the program. Your creative reflections will form part of a public showcase of Werklund student experiences later in the year.
  • Pre-service teachers will participate in 2 group meetings: one at the mid-point and another at the end of their placement (1 hour each). These group meetings provide pre-service teachers with opportunities to reflect on the community placement experience and to guide improvements for the program.

Applications are now closed. Please check back for more updates.

I was offered an opportunity to work in an Early Childhood class and it was a very hands on experience. I was able to work directly with the students and the teachers gave me advice on how to handle difficult behavioural problems.

PREP Participant

My Supervisor at PREP was very helpful and willing to explain not only what we were doing but also how to change it from an individualized approach to a class-based approach.
