Criteria

  • The Program for Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE) provides financial support to University of Calgary undergraduates to conduct research for 8, 12, or 16 weeks between May and August
  • Students must be continuing students (students who plan to graduate in June are ineligible for PURE)

Application Details

  1. Review the information available on the PURE Program site. Make note of any upcoming information sessions, and make a plan to attend
  2. Consider what areas you might like to research, and develop some potential research topics
  3. Reach out to faculty members who may be interested in supervising your research. If you have further questions or need assistance identifying a potential supervisor, please contact the Undergraduate Programs in Education office at upe@ucalgary.ca
  4. Once you have identified a supervisor, discuss your research project and prepare your application. Note that PURE proposals must originate with and be drafted principally by the student applicant
  5. Submit your application. For PURE, you and your supervisor will both need to submit an application (although your supervisor cannot submit their application until you have submitted yours). You can also submit an application to the Werklund Undergraduate Research Awards (although you can only accept one, with preference given to a PURE award)

Note: Please expect that you may not receive a response on your application until April.

Werklund Undergraduate Research Awards

Criteria

  • The Werklund Undergraduate Research Awards provide financial support to University of Calgary undergraduates to conduct research for 8 or 12 weeks between May and August. Students must be continuing students (students who plan to graduate in June are ineligible for Werklund Undergraduate Research Awards)
  • Students must make a full-time commitment to their research during the period of the Werklund Undergraduate Research Award
  • Werklund Undergraduate Research proposals must originate with, and be drafted principally by, the student applicant
  • Student must apply for the PURE Program to be eligible for this award. The PURE Program takes precedence over the Werklund Undergraduate Research Award

Application Details

  2. Consider what areas you might like to research, and develop some potential research topics

French Proficiency Improvement Grant

Up to $1500.00

Criteria

  • Students entering their second year (500-level EDUC courses) of the French Teachable Subject Area
  • Eligible students will use the award between Year 1 (400-level courses) and 2 of the BEd program
  • Students must demonstrate academic merit
  • This award will be used to improve French competency or to practice French language in a French setting

Application Details

  • A cover page with contact information (full name, UCID number, address, phone number, and email address)
  • A statement that details a plan for working on French competency (for example, enrolling in a summer French language program)
  • If applicable, proof of registration to a course or program is necessary
  • The French cohort instructors will review applications and inform successful and unsuccessful applicants
  • Applicants will be reimbursed eligible expenses upon return from their trip. Original receipts must be presented
  • Complete applications should be submitted electronically to upe@ucalgary.ca

Northern Student Teacher Bursary

Criteria

  • A Canadian citizen enrolled full-time in a post-secondary program at a designated institution
  • In the last two years of a program leading to a Bachelor of Education with a specialty in demand within northern Alberta
  • The Northern Student Teacher Bursary is a return service bursary offered to students in the last or second to last year of a Bachelor of Education degree. It is meant to encourage students who plan to teach in participating northern school divisions upon completion of their degree
