What is Virtual Teaching Across Borders?
Virtual TAB is a no cost, non-credit educational opportunity for pre-service teachers in the Fall semester. It focuses on intercultural matters related to educational philosophy and practice with emphasis on equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization. It fosters engagement around educational and societal topics that hold relevance at local and global contexts. Virtual TAB is a branch off the Teaching Across Borders program that aims to increase access to intercultural teaching and learning by delivering the program online. Through synchronous and asynchronous mediums, Virtual TAB is facilitated by an instructor. Students also hear from guest speakers and engage with fellow pre-service teaching students and instructor for a six-week period.
Werklund students in their Education years (EDUC 400s and 500s) and students from our partners institutions in Brazil, Canada (Quebec), Germany, Scotland, Spain, and the United States are invited to participate. In order to make the online exchange meaningful and participatory, the number of participants is limited. There are 12 spots for the Werklund School of Education and 5 spots for each participating partner institution.

Each class goes from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM MST on Saturdays
There will be no class on October 8, 2022.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Apply a variety of facilitation strategies to encourage discussion, generate ideas, and build consensus
- Apply a variety of leadership strategies to develop meaningful relationships with the program and its participants
- Develop cross-cultural competencies related to language, culture, and place.
- Examine how programming fosters inclusion and personal growth
- Examine how programs and educators create communities that are conducive to teaching and learning
- Examine how teaching and learning take place in other contexts
- Identify specific opportunities for you to contribute to program communities in a positive, professional manner
- Share and receive knowledge regarding teacher education and teaching practice
Participants will meet synchronously through Zoom and engage asynchronously through a course shell that will be created on D2LBrightSpace (University of Calgary's online portal).
There is no cost associated with Virtual TAB; it is entirely free of charge.
Participants are expected to be able to attend all 6 classes as part of this experience.
